PolliNation Action for Royal Docks Originals
Local school children recently joined forces with Projekt’s Pump House in Royal Victoria Dock for some PolliNation Action, as part of this year’s Royal Docks Originals festival.
Pupils from Ellen Wilkinson Primary School in Beckton teamed up with staff at the Pump House to replant containers at the entrance to the Freight café, enhancing local biodiversity with hardy, pollinator-friendly plants well-suited to the Royal Docks environment. The students are eco-guardians for their school, leading sustainability efforts through diverse initiatives such as recycling school uniform and art-champions incorporating recycled materials into their artworks.
Separately, students from the London Design & Engineering UTC also got involved, pitching eco-friendly and sustainable planter design ideas to members of the Royal Docks Team.
PolliNation is a creative initiative from the Royal Docks Team aimed at schools and young people in the Royal Docks and beyond. It is inspired by an educational pack created by local illustrator Matt Ponting, which encourages children of all ages to celebrate the vital role of pollinators in nurturing ecosystems and to explore their local environment through fun and engaging activities.
The replanting at Projekt's Pump House complements Blue Sunset, a vibrant new mural which adorns the building by artist collective Graphic Rewilding. The mural was commissioned by the Royal Docks Team for the Royal Docks Original’s public art series. Together, the living greenery and bold visual create a striking and welcoming gateway to Royal Victoria Dock.
Visit the mural during Royal Docks Originals and drop in at the festival hub, hosted at The Pump House, Freight Café from 15 September to 4 October 2025. Explore more of the festival’s programme celebrating local voices and creativity. Join in the PolliNation movement!
