Did you know one of the UK's largest on-site wormeries is tucked away inside Excel London?

Home to more than 300,000 worms, this innovative system gives food waste a second life, transforming it into compost used throughout the venue's green spaces.

From leftovers to living soil

Every day, the on-site wormery helps process leftover food from cafés, catering outlets and events at Excel London and Immerse LDN.

Since 2007, organic material has been transformed into nutrient-rich compost through a natural process, creating a closed-loop system that keeps resources in use rather than going to waste.

How it works

A wormery uses a process called vermiculture, where worms feed on food waste and convert it into compost and liquid fertiliser. These are used on plants, flower beds and trees around the venue, including the living wall at the Custom House station entrance.

It’s low-tech, but highly effective. The system requires little energy, produces minimal emissions and creates a valuable end product.

Small organisms, big impact

While the idea might sound modest, the scale makes a real difference. By dealing with waste locally, it reduces transport emissions and supports a more circular approach, where materials are reused rather than lost.

Part of a bigger shift

The wormery is one part of Excel London's wider approach to sustainability. For more than a decade, the venue has sent zero waste to landfill and continues to focus on reducing emissions, using resources responsibly and finding practical ways to keep materials in use.
