Missing Medals: Unearthing Invisible Seafaring Histories of Empire'

A walking tour exploring migration and British imperialism. Asif Shakoor, will tell the story of his migrant grandfather, Mahomed Gama, who enlisted in the Mercantile Marine and arriving on SS Khiva at the Royal Victoria Dock in December 1917 and his search for his grandfather’s missing war medals. He will unearth the invisible seafaring histories of Empire touring hidden sites around the vicinity of the Royal Victoria Dock.

Bio:

Asif Shakoor is an independent scholar. He grew up in Manor Park and studied at the University of East London. His grandfather, Mahomed Gama, enlisted in the Mercantile Marine and arrived at the Royal Victoria Dock in December 1917. He has presented research at national conferences and local events.
