Bittersweet: Legacies of Sugar launch and collage workshop
Join the launch of Bittersweet: Legacies of Sugar at Cundy Community Centre on Saturday 6 June (1–2pm). This new community programme brings together free events, workshops and talks exploring the powerful and often untold stories behind sugar, and its role in shaping global history, local communities, family histories, health, and everyday life today.

Following the launch, take part in ‘Coming Together’ (2–4pm), a hands-on collage workshop with artist Marilyn Fontaine. Using archival images, photographs, fabric and newsprint, you’ll create a personal collage that weaves your family history into the legacy of Tate & Lyle workers and South Newham.
Working from a large-scale portrait of workers, you’ll place your story alongside others and together the collages will form a shared community timeline of Silvertown and Canning Town.

Please note: the launch and workshop require separate bookings.
Bittersweet: Legacies of Sugar is presented by the Newham African Caribbean Heritage Reference Group in partnership with Museum X, and funded by Lyle’s Local Fund.
