Alexandria’s Genesis
Visit Alexandria’s Genesis, a new exhibition at arebyte Gallery located on London City Island. Alexandria’s Genesis, by artist Dian Joy examines how digital folklore shapes self-perception and social ideologies, with a focus on perpetuating myths about the body. Stemming from a widely circulated fanfiction entitled ‘Purple Eyes and Other Interesting Anomalies’, the exhibition delves into the internet myth of Alexandria’s Genesis. This viral lore describes an idealised genetic condition, marked by pale skin, purple eyes, extended lifespan, immunity to disease, and freedom from bodily waste as well as unwanted hair growth. Although rooted in fiction, this myth gained widespread attention online.
Through filmmaking, animation, and archival research, Dian traces the roots of this myth, exploring how digital content reflects our desires and acts as a disciplinary force, policing how we see ourselves and exist within these systems.
Join the free opening party on Thursday 14 November, 6.30pm - 9pm. To reserve your space book via Eventbrite.
Following the opening, the exhibition is un-ticketed and runs Tuesday to Sunday, 1 - 6pm until 12 Jan 2025.
