Art & Culture
Do you play football, or are you passionate about the game and excited for the Women’s Euros coming to London later this Summer?
We are looking for footballers and fans who identify as women and non-binary to take part in a new artistic project that celebrates and reflects the women and girls in Newham who love and play football.
This project is inspired by women’s football and Green Street with its historic links to the game, together with the diverse communities who live in and around the area. Collaborating with artists and musicians, you’ll co-create a kit or an anthem that reflects what football and Newham means to you. You don’t need any creative experience to take part in the project, just a love for the game and where you live!
This project is commissioned Royal Docks Team, and co-produced with Beki Bateson Ltd.
Football Anthem
We think women’s football, and the women and girls who play football in Newham, deserves an anthem. What might it sound like? Collaborating with a musician, you’ll co-create the lyrics to a new, intergenerational music track to celebrate football in the area. The song will be recorded and performed by a professional musician, and you’ll be credited on the track, which will be released on the Royal Docks website.
Football kit
If you could design a football kit, what might your dream kit look like? How would you design it to reflect you and your teammates? Four emerging designers free Caramel Rock, together with a textile designer, will work with a group of footballers to design and make a series of football kits to be displayed on Green Street and worn in a dance performance on Green Street inspired by the game.
You don’t need any arts or music experience to take part in these workshops, just a love for the game and where you live. Workshops will be around one hour, later in May/June at a venue in Newham, with refreshments provided.
Football Tournament
We spoke with women footballers in the area, and you asked for a tournament! This July, we are organising a one-day, five-a-side football tournament in the Royal Docks for Newham-based football teams. This will be a fun, family-friendly day, with football workshops for younger children attending with their families. There will be two pitches – one for under 16 years team and one for over 16 years teams. If you are a local women or girls football team that would like to be part of the day, please get in touch!
