Transforming Compressor House
The Royal Docks Team, in partnership with Newham, is breathing new life into Compressor House to create a landmark destination and multi-functional space for local communities and beyond.
Located moments from Royal Albert DLR, near Newham Council’s offices, it was built in 1914 as a cold storage facility for cargo. This historic, locally listed building is one of the few remaining structures from the Royal Docks’ time as a global shipping hub. It features distinctive red brickwork and an impressive open hall, where the original hoists, rails, and winching machinery used to move produce have been preserved. Its bold industrial interior and rich heritage offer an exciting opportunity to reimagine and transform the space to welcome the community.
The opportunity
In February 2025, the Royal Docks Team announced a call-out for Expressions of Interest from partners to put forward a compelling vision for Compressor House. The successful operator(s) will repurpose the building to create a venue that celebrates the building’s unique character, unlocks its potential and capitalises on the growing draw of the Royal Docks as a destination.
Compressor House is set to become a pivotal part of the Royal Docks' economic, social and creative fabric, supporting Newham’s cultural, digital, and community wealth-building priorities. Once operational, the venue will provide an inclusive space where communities and visitors can connect and learn. It will offer digital skills training, boosting inclusion and aligning with Newham Sparks to position the area as a hub for digital sector innovators and investors. Compressor House will also support the Royal Docks' ambition to become London’s cultural engine, and respond to community feedback which highlighted the desire for the venue to showcase arts, music, performances, and exhibitions, alongside place-based activations featuring food, beverages, and events.
Refurbishment
The building is undergoing a comprehensive retrofit, funded by the UK Government and secured by Newham Council, with completion scheduled for Summer 2025. The works include the installation of a café area, a new heating and ventilation system, gender-neutral restrooms, an event space for up to 400 attendees and advanced digital and lighting facilities.
