Silvertown Tunnel set to open in April 2025
After more than a decade in development, the Silvertown Tunnel - London's first new sub-river road tunnel in thirty years – is set to open on April 7.
Linking Silvertown in the Royal Docks to the Greenwich Peninsula, the 1.4km Silvertown Tunnel will help reduce congestion at the Blackwall Tunnel, deliver faster journeys during peak times, help manage overall air quality and allow for better cross-river public transport. Plans also include improvements for walking and cycling around the tunnel entrances - part of major regeneration on both sides of the river.
- Average journey times are expected to be up to 20 minutes quicker at peak times.
- New bus routes, including the Superloop 4 (SL4) between Canary Wharf and Grove Park, will launch on the same day and be free for the first year.
- The number of buses able to cross the river will increase from 6 to 21 per hour.
- A new zero-emission cycle-shuttle service, due to operate every 12 minutes, seven days a week from 06:30 to 21:30
To deliver these benefits, charges will apply to both the Silvertown and Blackwall Tunnels. Without the charges, traffic would increase in both tunnels causing delays and congestion, which contribute to poorer air quality.
The user charge is designed to manage levels of traffic using the tunnels. It will also pay for the construction and ongoing maintenance and operation of the scheme. A package of concessions, discounts and exemptions will be available to support Londoners, small businesses and charities.
