Royal Docks Reimagined: A Short Film
As part of Royal Docks Originals 2025, our Compressor Housewarming events invited local communities to rediscover this historic venue following its refurbishment.
A highlight from the programme was Royal Docks Reimagined, which encouraged visitors to connect with the Royal Docks 3D model and reflect on the area’s past, present, and future through inspiring talks and hands-on creative workshops.
Over 400 participants - including school children, art clubs, SEND groups, older residents, and members of the public - joined us to share their vision and new possibilities for the Royal Docks. Each session started with guided discussions around the model, followed by craft activities where participants built bold and imaginative structures for a “reimagined Royal Docks.” Ideas ranged from floating cafés and theatres to green spaces, libraries, saunas, and even a windmill!
The project was co-created with Art in the Docks, building on their previous community model-making initiative using recycled materials. Local school Gallions Primary, inspired by their studies of architect Zaha Hadid, embraced the chance to put learning into practice. Meanwhile art group, Art for Fun, enjoyed engaging in creative activities in an inspiring new venue.
Generously co-sponsored by Ballymore, the event also welcomed community partners and local stakeholders, including the soon-to-open Newham Heritage Centre and a future Royal Docks Padel operator.
The three-day event was documented by local videographer Goodness Duru as part of You Press’ Change Agency. The resulting short film, Royal Docks Reimagined, captures community voices, aspirations, and challenges, and will be shared with developers and partners to inspire creative collaboration.
The success of this pilot project also lays the foundation for future events that meaningfully connect communities with the transformation of the Royal Docks, ensuring regeneration is rooted in local identity and imagination.
