Royal Docks Corridor Wins Gold
The Royal Docks Corridor project, a joint initiative between the Royal Docks Team and Newham Council, has won Active Travel Scheme of the Year at the prestigious Highways Awards, one of the industry's highest accolades for excellence in transport and public realm delivery.
The award recognises projects that demonstrate outstanding design, innovation and measurable benefits for both local communities and the environment. Judges considered schemes that have delivered significant improvements in safety, accessibility and sustainable travel while creating lasting positive change.
The Royal Docks Corridor has transformed a 3.5km route previously dominated by high-speed traffic and HGVs into a safer, greener and more accessible connection for people walking and cycling. The scheme has delivered more than 6km of protected cycle lanes, wider footways, upgraded crossings, improved wayfinding, new public spaces and extensive landscaping, creating a key active travel link between neighbourhoods and transport hubs across the Royal Docks, from Canning Town to Silvertown.
Designed with safety at its core, the project rebalanced road space in favour of pedestrians and cyclists, reducing vehicle dominance and creating a more welcoming environment for all users.
The scheme also delivers significant environmental benefits, including one of the UK's largest urban rain garden networks, more than 200 new trees and over 11,000m² of landscaping. Together, these improvements help improve air quality, reduce flood risk, support biodiversity and enhance the public realm along the route.

The final phase of the project, at Western Gateway Junction outside City Hall, is due to complete in October 2026, with the Royal Docks Team also progressing plans for wider public realm improvements in Royal Victoria.
As part of this ongoing transformation, the Royal Docks Team has worked closely with Newham to deliver a series of landmark wayfinding structures designed to improve navigation, create a stronger sense of arrival and strengthen connections across the Royal Docks. Designed by 5th Studio, the colour-coded system helps people explore the area on foot and by other active travel modes, building on the wayfinding structures installed at Pontoon Dock in 2025.
