Royal Docks Corridor: A major step forward with next phase of works

The Royal Docks Corridor is embarking on an exciting new chapter as the next phase of improvement works gets underway.

A programme of street and public realm upgrades will transform Western Gateway Junction - a key location in the heart of the Royal Docks, just outside City Hall. This marks the most ambitious phase of the Royal Docks Corridor project, which has already delivered major improvements to the 6km route along the Silvertown Way and the North Woolwich Road.

What's happening next?

The upcoming works will focus on redesigning Western Gateway junction, a central hub in Royal Victoria, which provides vital connections across the area.

Starting on 27 October, the works will take approximately one year to complete. The improvements will include:

  • Reduced traffic speeds
  • Segregated cycle tracks
  • New public spaces
  • More green space, trees, and planting
  • Sustainable drainage systems

For more information on the proposed street layouts, see Western Gateway street & public realm project plans.

Designed for people

Inspired by the success of earlier phases, the upgrade will encourage walking and cycling, introduce informal areas for play and exercise, and include interactive street design features that invite people to engage with their surroundings.

The plans also include removing traffic signals to simplify the junction and reconfiguring pedestrian crossings to reflect natural walking patterns, particularly near Seagull Lane. New walking routes will better connect the DLR station to City Hall and link Tidal Basin in the west with Excel in the east, making it easier and more enjoyable to navigate the area on foot.

Better connections for cyclists and businesses

The designs will also relocate the Brompton cycle hire hub and improve cycle lane connectivity to key transport links, including the DLR and TfL shuttle bus stop. The outlook and usability of nearby commercial spaces, including those at the Hoola building and Gateway Tower, will be improved, creating more vibrant street-level activity.

Looking back: the official opening of the Corridor, September 2025

In September 2025, the Royal Docks Corridor programme celebrated the completion of works between Canning Town and Connaught Bridge, marking a major milestone in one of London’s most ambitious regeneration and transport projects. Will Norman, London’s Walking & Cycling Commissioner, and Rokhsana Fiaz, Mayor of Newham joined local councillors, and local school students to mark the occasion.

The newly completed corridor now features 6km of dedicated cycle lanes, wider pavements, safer crossings, and greener public spaces. More than 180 trees have been planted, and over 4,000m² of linear rain gardens now line the route, forming part of a Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) that helps manage surface water and improve filtration. These improvements have created safer, more inviting streets that support cleaner air and healthier, more active lifestyles.

September 2025: Residents came together for a community fun day to celebrate the completion of upgrade works, including the transformation of the square outside Pontoon Dock station.

The Royal Docks Corridor programme is a partnership between the Royal Docks Team and Newham Council.
